Our Story

Niche Nurses story begins in 2017; the founder's wife moved to the UK from the Philippines in 2015 to study a MSc in Nursing and successfully graduated at a British University. She came to the UK to further her career after working in the Philippines as a registered Nurse and to gain international work experience in an English-speaking country. She experienced multiple setbacks with her NMC registration due to the requirements set by the NMC for IELTS.

The requirements were very strict, the NMC required all foreign nurses achieve a level 7 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Failure to achieve level 7 in 1 category meant that you had to redo the test which cost approximately £150 in 2017 and the price of this test has continued to rise ever since the founder first heard about it.

Although she accomplished a level 7 overall, nearly every time she took the test, she was forced to redo it as no feedback was ever given in all 4 categories. This led to many arguments as the founder could not understand how a registered nurse from the Philippines with a MSc in Nursing from a British University was being told that her English was not good enough when the minimum requirement of a nurse born in the UK is a GCSE, grade C.

Through her setbacks the founder realized that many highly skilled nurses were facing the same challenges of finding a job in their chosen profession.

He read several articles on IELTS to get a deeper understanding of the problem foreign nurses were facing working in the UK.

On the 30th of April 2022 the Guardian published an article stating “Overseas nurses barred from profession due to ‘discriminatory’ language exam”

The main point highlighted in the article by the Guardian was that “Many native English speakers unable to reach standard demanded by Nursing and Midwifery Council, critics claim”
